Day and Night in the Quran

One of the most important and talked about things by Allah in the Quran is the matters of the universe, the solar system, the sun and the moon so that people understand the world that they see around them and appreciate the science behind everything.

Researchers and scientists are still discovering massive things which Allah has already mentioned in the Quran for us to gather ourselves, using our own intelligences. The process of day and night is one of them. “And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.” [36:38] Muslims are told by Allah in the Quran the science behind day and night.

However, one thing that Allah mentions again and again in the Quran is that He has made day for us to work and go about our normal business and He has made night for us to rest. Allah has said in the Quran: “He it is Who made for you the night that you should rest therein, and the day to see. Surely in those are signs, indications of His Oneness, exalted be He, for folk who are able to hear (those who think deeply).”

Allah tells us that there are signs for us in this. There are benefits of working in the day which include health and well being benefits. For example, when people work during the day they receive the sun, the light of which has a positive effect on the mind and body, giving us energy. Sunlight also gives us vitamin D which is important for our bones and muscles. These are the signs that we should take note of. During the night, the sunshine is taken away from us leaving our bodies to relax and rest.

Allah says in the Quran, “And a sign for them is the night. We remove from it [the light of] day, so they are [left] in darkness.” [36:37]The darkness is not a sign of misery. Rather it is a sign from Allah to take a rest and then wait for sunshine once again, where you will get back to your routine chores.

Hence Allah has made day and night, constellations and galaxies, the milky way and the planetarium and left it open for us to explore and study. Allah has made day and night and asked us to discipline our bodies and minds to follow the correctness of our routines in it. May Allah enable all of us to follow his instructions in the Quran, Ameen.
