Benefits Of Ayatul Kursi | The Greatest Verse in the Quran

Ayat al-Kursi, also known as the “Throne verse”, is considered to be the greatest verse in the Book of Allah (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255). It holds great significance in Islam and is recited by Muslims for various spiritual and protective purposes.

According to Hadith:

Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrated that

"Allah has not created in the heavens nor in the earth what is more magnificent than Ayat Al-Kursi." Sufyan said: "Because Ayat Al-Kursi is the Speech of Allah, and Allah's Speech is greater than Allah's creation of the heavens and the earth."

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2884

The text of Ayatul Kursi

Before delving into its importance, let's first explore the text of Ayatul Kursi:

Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. (Quran, 2:255)

Here are some of the commonly believed benefits of reciting Ayatul Kursi:

Master of all the Ayat

In Surat Al-Baqara (2:255), there is Ayat which is the master of all Ayat in the Qur'an and the Ayat of the Throne.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ):

"For everything there is a hump (pinnacle) and the hump (pinnacle) of the Qur'an is Surat Al-Baqarah, in it there is an Ayah which is the master of the Ayat in the Qur'an; [it is] Ayat Al-Kursi."

Grade: Da'if (Darussalam)

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2878

In another Hadith Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

"Do not turn your houses into graves. Indeed Ash-Shaitan does not enter the house in which Surat Al-Baqarah is recited."

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2877

In Surah Al-Baqarah, there is an ayah which is the master of all the Ayat in the Quran. It is never recited in a house but the Shaytan leaves that is Ayatul Kursi.

Protection from Jinn (satan)

Islam attributes special status and protective qualities to Ayatul Kursi. Reciting it makes Satan run away.

Muhammad bin Sirin narrated that Abu Huraira said,

"Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) put me in charge of the Zakat of Ramadan (i.e. Zakat-ul-Fitr). Someone came to me and started scooping some of the foodstuff of (Zakat) with both hands. I caught him and told him that I would take him to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)." Then Abu Huraira told the whole narration and added "He (i.e. the thief) said, 'Whenever you go to your bed, recite the Verse of "Al-Kursi" (2.255) for then a guardian from Allah will be guarding you, and Satan will not approach you till dawn.' " On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He told you the truth, though he is a liar, and he (the thief) himself was the Satan."

Sahih al-Bukhari 3275

In this Hadith, a wonderful story told in a hadith that Abu Huraira said from Sahih al-Bukhari, Abu Huraira was responsible for Zakat al-Fitr (charitable alms for the needy during Ramadan). He caught someone stealing food from it and threatened to report him to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The thief advised Abu Huraira to recite Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) before sleeping, saying it would protect him from Satan until dawn. When Abu Huraira shared this with the Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet confirmed the thief's words, acknowledging that even though the thief was dishonest, the advice about Ayat al-Kursi's protective power was true.

Significance of Ayatul Kursi after prayer

Abu Umamah (RA) narrated that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:

"Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi at the end of every obligatory prayer, nothing but death will prevent him from entering Paradise."

[An-Nasa'i reported it, and Ibn Hibban graded it Sahih (authentic).

Including this practice in daily worship is believed to guarantee entry into Paradise, except in the case of death.
