Understanding the Quran

We Muslims, once we reach the age of 4, our parents send us off to learn to read the Quran irrespective of whether we understand the Arabic scripture or not, we have to learn how to read it. This is the lone purpose.

While growing up, I always wondered is reciting the Quran just enough? I mean, yes, when you read it, you feel serene, just like when you sit on the seashore listening to the waves crashing. That sound makes your entire problem go away. That is how one feels when reading the Quran. Except you cannot go to the sea regularly, but yes, you can read the Quran anytime and anywhere.

Therefore, I finally sat and researched, and found out; we are indebted to understand the Quran, so we should not make excuses of not understanding Arabic. It is our duty as Muslims to understand it. Especially, when we can get the translation of Quran in any language. Everything is so effortless for us; we just have to be motivated.

“And indeed We have made the Qur’an easy for you to understand and remember: Is there any that will receive caution?” - (Quran 54:17)

This verse clearly specifies that Quran is the book for you to understand, it is a book of guidance, with warnings against the evil and devils.

Hence, our main aim should be to understand it rather than only reciting it. Yes, recitation has its benefits. It brings us close to Allah, as the person who has faith in it, recites it; develops, humbleness and fear. However, without meaning it is just words, you cannot acquire the guidance which you are worthy of.
